Johan Maelwael

Johan Maelwael (c. 1370-1415) is the first known Dutch painter. More than six hundred years ago, he was one of the most successful artists in Western Europe. Maelwael grew up in Nijmegen, the oldest town in the Netherlands, situated in the Duchy of Gelre. Around 1400, he celebrated his heyday in Duon. An important artistic centre in Europe. This publication describes Maelwael's life, his work and his place in history, and thus offers a first introduction to enthusiasts and new insights to specialists.
